Getting Lucky

When you ask people how they found a job they love, what you learn is that a lot of it seemed like good luck.

Chance occurrences more often determine our life and career choices than all of the careful planning you do.

A chance meeting, a broken appointment, a spontaneous vacation, a temporary job, a newly discovered hobby, lead to unexpected life directions and career choices.

So What?

You will get the most of what life offers by taking actions to:

  • Open up opportunities
  • Take advantage of chance events
  • Keep your options open

Some tips (From Luck is No Accident, by John Krumboltz)

  • Make the most of unplanned events
  • In your career - keep your options open
  • Test your dream - one step at a time
  • Don't stick with a bad choice
  • Listen to advice - but make up your own mind
  • Open yourself to alternatives
  • Live mindfully - so you'll see what's offered
  • Put your desired outcome “out there!”
  • Tell everyone you meet about your idea
  • Try options… even without knowing the outcome
  • Go ahead and make mistakes
  • Take action “out of the box” to create your own luck
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. -Confucius
